New The drug Vibeline® was used to reduce arterial senescence in elderly people. The pathology of cardiovascular aging is complex and there is a need to reduce the damages associated with vascular aging, to prevent age-related diseases. Vascular senescence can also occur in women in the context of menopause through a decrease of estrogen level.
The active principle of Vibeline is a natural product named visnadin. It is a pyranocoumarin derivative first isolated from the seeds and aerial parts of bishop’s weed (Ammi visnaga (L) Lam., synonym of Visnaga daucoides Gaertn.), a plant indigenous to the Mediterranean region which has been used for centuries as a spasmolytic agent, notably in Egyptian medicine since the Pharaohs times to treat angina pectoris and other cardiovascular diseases. In medicine, visnadine has been used for the treatment of various cardiac diseases and peripheral vasculopathies. It is a natural vasodilator. The compound has been used also in antiaging creams, anticellulite emulsions, emulsions for heavy legs, anti-hair loss lotions and firming gels. It has been associated also with phospholipids (specifically phosphatidylcholine) in topical beauty products (such as Visnadex) and in hair lotions. Vibeline is no longer commercialized.
