This drug was used in the 1970s to treat asthma crisis and emphysema, but also hay fever. It contained several active principles such as (i) the antispasmodic alkaloid atropine sulfate which is a muscarinic receptor antagonist, (ii) the isoquinoline alkaloid papaverine contributing to the antispasmodic effect, (iii) the related alkaloids theobromine and caffeine with psychostimulatory properties, (iv) the fatty acid agaric acid (also called agaricin), a regulator of lipid metabolism, (v) and amidopyrine (aminophenazone) with anti-inflammatory properties. Thanasmine exhibited anti-asthmatic and antidyspneic properties. Its broncholytic action was useful to treat pulmonory affections. The drug was available under two forms, oral tablets and suppositories. The drug is no longer used today.
